As a scientist, I ask a lot of questions and have a natural curiosity about why things work the way they do. When I first heard that essential oils were nature’s original medicine, I was skeptical. Even though my family had experienced definite benefits from their usage, I was not fully satisfied with the answers I heard about why essential oils should work in the human body. Young Living Founder Gary Young said that essential oils are the lifeblood of the plant, but while I can see that essential oils serve a similar purpose in plants as blood does in the human body, we are not plants. So why should oils distilled from plant materials be so beneficial to human beings? Gary pointed out that essential oils carry vital nutrients to cells, cleanse cells and receptor sites, and oxygenate the blood. I was intrigued and I could see that, due to their ability to transport oxygen into the system, essential oils might have effects similar to hyperbaric treatments which provide oxygen to cells and tissues to reduce pain and promote rapid healing.
Why do essential oils work so well for humans? To my surprise, studying mold-related illness and understanding why oils are so effective against mold and bacteria has supplied the answer to this question. Consider this: When a living organism dies, mold, along with other microorganisms attack the body to break it down into compounds for food. This is a natural process that continually recycles organic materials on our planet. The difference between mold and the scavengers we usually think of, like vultures, is that molds (fungi) do not care whether you are alive or dead—they are attacking you all the time. Right now, in fact, they are doing what they do best, trying to reduce your body to useable food stuff!
Why are essential oils so beneficial and work so well in and on our bodies? They are the plants’ natural immune system! They destroy microorganisms that destroy plants, and those same microorganisms can do us great harm. I am continuing to collect scientific data on the results of using essential oils to eliminate bacteria and mold. That data, collected over the past five years, provides scientific evidence that Young Living essential oils are the best defense available against toxic mold and mold-related illnesses.
