Essential oils have been used for centuries, offering a natural and effective way to enhance well-being. From ancient civilisations to modern holistic practices, these concentrated plant extracts have played a vital role in medicine, self-care and even household applications. But what makes essential oils so powerful?
In this article, we’ll explore the fascinating history of essential oils, their numerous benefits and how they can be incorporated into daily life for better health.
Did you know that Listerine (mouthwash) was originally created as a surgical antiseptic? The active ingredients in the original formula were essential oils of eucalyptus, peppermint, thyme and wintergreen. It was named after Dr. Joseph Lister, a Scottish surgeon, who discovered around 1896 that using natural essential oils for disinfection dramatically reduced post-operative deaths from 50% to 3%.
Since antiquity, pure essential oils have been used for preservation, purification, hygiene, spiritual awareness and even food flavoring. In ancient times, only the privileged could afford distilled essential oils, while common people relied on boiling herbs in water.
Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, once said, “The way to health is to have aromatic massage and scented bath every day.” This ancient wisdom still holds value today.
Essential oils are produced by plants for self-defense and survival. Some oils attract insects for pollination, others protect against moisture loss and some aid in wound healing. Interestingly, plants produce more essential oils when under stress, such as during harvest.
Medicinally, essential oils are much more concentrated than dry herbs, making them highly oxygenating and fast-acting when of the right quality. They are also convenient to transport and administer.
Common foods like oranges, lemons, peppermint, ginger, sage and oregano naturally contain essential oils, which humans have been consuming for centuries. However, many doctors are unfamiliar with the benefits of essential oils, as medical schools focus primarily on pharmaceuticals. Unlike standardised chemical drugs, plant-based remedies vary slightly in composition, which can make them seem less “evidence-based” despite their long history of effectiveness.
Taking charge of your health involves prevention, minimising harm from synthetic substances and knowing how to control damage. If you’re wearing a mask for protection, why not add a drop or two of therapeutic essential oils like lavender, lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus, or melaleuca (tea tree) to enhance your breathing experience?
One essential product I always carry is Inner Defense, a blend of seven essential oils (clove, cinnamon bark, rosemary, lemon, oregano, thyme and lemongrass) known for their purifying and protective properties. (Be sure to take it with food, not on an empty stomach.)
Dr. Edward Close has documented how Thieves oil blend is more effective at killing mold than chemical cleaners. Diffusing Thieves, along with essential oils like tea tree, rosemary, oregano and thyme, can help maintain a clean environment at home or work.
Not all essential oils are created equal. Many products labeled as “100% Pure” actually contain synthetic additives or lack therapeutic potency. Regulations around essential oil labeling are loose, so it’s crucial to distinguish quality oils for safe use. For those looking for high-quality essential oils in Hong Kong, sourcing from trusted suppliers is essential. Reputable brands ensure purity and therapeutic potency.

Essential oils are powerful, but they are not a replacement for proper nutrition. A well-balanced diet rich in whole foods and nutrient-dense superfoods is essential for overall health. Key supplements that support immunity include zinc, probiotics, and vitamin C. [Read more here.]
Additionally, reducing or eliminating sugar, dairy, alcohol, and excessive caffeine can further strengthen immunity. High caffeine intake raises cortisol levels and increases acidity, which may negatively impact the body’s balance.
A good night’s sleep and effective stress management are crucial for maintaining a strong immune system. High cortisol levels deplete immunity, making relaxation techniques essential. Consider these practices:

Note: The term “Aromatherapy” originated in France, where modern aromatic medicine began. As it spread to English-speaking countries, its applications became more diluted. There are various approaches to aromatherapy, each suited for different purposes. We encourage proactive individuals to continue their learning journey.
